6 Common Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

Ovarian cancer is gynecological cancer that begins in the ovaries. The female reproductive system has two ovaries, one on either side of the uterus. The ovaries get affected by abnormal tumor cells, resulting in cancer. Early-stage ovarian cancer can be treated successfully. The symptoms are subtle. Here are six symptoms of ovarian cancer.

1. Unexplained Weight loss
If you find that you are losing more than a few pounds without changing your diet or lifestyle, or exercise habits, it is a cause for worry. You must undergo a health check to rule out any malignancy like cancer.

2. Fatigue and exhaustion
A busy day or week can wear anyone out, and in most cases, a little rest will ensure your recovery. If there is no change and you continue feeling exhausted, something is wrong. If you notice that fatigue is interfering with your work at home and office, your ability to perform regular activities, stop blaming your hectic lifestyle, and ensure that you visit the doctor. Get your health checkup done and if all basic parameters are normal, check for any signs of cancer.

3. Menstrual irregularities and vaginal bleeding
Vaginal bleeding (particularly if you are post-menopause) may happen. You may also suffer from intermittent bleeding between your periods or spotting in between your regular menstrual cycle. Vaginal discharge, which is not normal, may also occur. Sometimes the vaginal discharge may be bloody, dark, or smelly, which is a sign of infection. Consult your doctor for an evaluation if you experience irregular menstruation or abnormal discharge, as these could be signs of cervical cancer.

4. Painful intercourse
Dyspareunia is used for pain felt in the genital area or pelvis during or after intercourse. There are many causes of dyspareunia, of which most are not serious, but it can also be a symptom of ovarian cancer. Treat it; if it continues, then go for a pelvic examination.

5. Pressure in the lower back or pelvis
You may have sudden and severe pelvic pain. Your symptoms can be accompanied by fever, nausea, or vomiting. Furthermore, an ovarian cyst may have ruptured or twisted an ovary. Do not delay in reaching for medical assistance in these instances.

6. Change in bowel habits
You could suffer from constipation or a continuous urge to pass stools. If these symptoms last for a day or two, it could be because of your food. However, if it continues for prolonged periods, it may be a sign of something externally pressing on the colon. Gynecologic cancers like ovarian cancer can cause these problems. Changes in bowel habits can also occur because cancer has spread to the bowel. Furthermore, fluid build-up due to cancer can also add pressure on the bowel, affecting the bowel area.
